Ruta Sierra de Francia

The Sierra de Francia is located in the southeast of the province of Salamanca. It is an important part of the central system characterized by its forests of melojo, chestnut and pine forests, among which steep quartzitic canchales stand out. It stands out above all, the whole of the Peña de Francia, constituted by its sanctuary, with its more than 1700 meters of altitude and which houses an endemic lizard species.

The natural park of Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia is home to a vegetation that confers a certain similarity with the forests of Atlantic character, more typical of the north of the peninsula. Among the marblescent oaks is a rich vegetation of underbrush, composed to a greater extent by hawthorn, strawberry tree, broom and holly. We even found some beech forest. All this is mixed with areas of Mediterranean vegetation, such as the holm oak, the durillo or the jara pringosa.

Undoubtedly the most characteristic species is the mountain goat, followed by roe deer and wild boar. The mustelids are also well represented in the area, although their observation is complex. The Batuecas – Sierra de Francia constituted, together with other adjacent spaces, until a few decades ago the refuge in the province for the most threatened mammal, the Iberian Lynx. Regarding birds, more than 120 species inhabit these mountains. Among all of them, the Black Vulture stands out, since it has some nearby breeding colony, the Peregrine Falcon and a couple of Red-billed Chough. In the highest summits we find wintering populations of Alpine Accentor and even specimens of Alpine Sparrow have been observed.

In the interior of the forests we will find birds of very diverse nature, such as the Capuchin Herrerillo, the Common Bullfinch, the Chickadee, the Arrendajo or Gallo (as it is called in the area) and raptors like the Common Goshawk.

On the banks of the fast and capricious streams we will find the Waterbird and the amphibian species as interesting as the Marbled Triton.
